The Revit plugins that save the most hours, and when none of them fits
A straight comparison of the most-used productivity and data management add-ins: what they do, what's free, what's paid, and the point where a custom plugin is worth it.
Which Revit plugins are worth it for productivity and data?
| Plugin | What it's for | Cost | Worth noting |
|---|---|---|---|
| pyRevit | Dozens of productivity tools and a platform to build your own in Python | Free, open source (GPL-3.0) | Takes extensions, such as pyRevitMEP |
| DiRootsOne | A suite with ParaManager, FamilyReviser, OneFilter, SheetGen, ViewManager and more | Freemium: SheetLink, TableGen and OneParameter are Premium only | Compatible up to Revit 2027 |
| ProSheets (DiRoots) | Batch export of sheets to PDF and DWG | Freemium since October 2024 | Scheduled export is paid |
| Ideate BIMLink | Pull model data into Excel and push it back to Revit | Paid, annual license | Hundreds of ready-made link definitions |
| Model Checker (Autodesk) | Check the model against rules and get an Excel report | Free for licensed Revit users | Its API is unsupported from version 10.0 (Revit 2026) |
Which plugin should you pick for data management and Excel?
It depends on how often the workflow repeats and who will use it:
- Creating and organizing parameters: ParaManager, in the free tier of DiRootsOne, creates, edits and exports parameters to Excel and to the shared parameter file.
- Editing data in Excel and pushing it back: SheetLink (DiRootsOne Premium) or Ideate BIMLink. Both match each row to its element.
- A one-off or a test: Dynamo, which ships with Revit and reads and writes .xlsx without Excel installed. We walk through the nodes in Dynamo for Revit: your first 5 scripts.
- Checking the standard before every deliverable: Model Checker, with your firm's rule set.
Which ones are free?
pyRevit, the free tier of DiRootsOne, the base version of ProSheets, and Model Checker for licensed Revit users. For developers, RevitLookup, also free and open source, shows every element's parameters and internal properties.
Free doesn't mean zero cost: someone has to install them, update them with every Revit release and train the team.
When is an off-the-shelf plugin not enough?
When your workflow has rules no product knows about:
- The standard is yours: your firm's naming, codes, required parameters and deliverable formats.
- You need validation before writing: allowed values, units, type versus instance conflicts.
- Several steps in one button: fill, check, export and log who changed what.
- It talks to other systems: cost estimating, ERP or the client's spreadsheet.
In those cases, a custom plugin often costs less than bending the team around a generic tool. We break down the costs in how much a Revit or Civil 3D add-in costs.
How do you install plugins safely?
- Download only from the vendor or the Autodesk App Store.
- Prefer signed plugins: Revit warns you when an add-in has no digital signature.
- Check the version: Revit 2025 and 2026 load plugins on .NET 8, and 2027 on .NET 10. An older plugin may not load.
- Test on a copy of the model before using it in production.

Frequently asked questions about Revit plugins
What are the best free Revit plugins?
For productivity and data: pyRevit, which is free and open source; the free tier of DiRootsOne, with ParaManager, OneFilter, FamilyReviser and other tools; the base version of ProSheets for exporting sheets; and Autodesk Model Checker, free for licensed Revit users. Developers usually add RevitLookup.
Which Revit plugin exports and imports data with Excel?
SheetLink, on DiRootsOne's Premium plan, and Ideate BIMLink, which is paid, export data to Excel and push it back to the model by matching each row to its element. For a one-off workflow, Dynamo also works: since version 2.12 it reads and writes .xlsx files without Excel installed.
Is pyRevit free?
Yes. pyRevit is free and open source under the GPL-3.0 license. It ships dozens of productivity tools and lets you build your own in Python or add extensions such as pyRevitMEP. Before installing, check its GitHub repository for the Revit versions the current release supports.
When is a custom plugin better than an off-the-shelf one?
When the workflow depends on your firm's own rules: naming, codes, required parameters or deliverable formats; when data has to be validated before it's written; or when the plugin has to talk to other systems, such as cost estimating or an ERP. In those cases, bending the team around a generic tool usually costs more.
Who develops custom Revit plugins?
Zeist builds C# plugins for Revit and Civil 3D, remotely, for firms in English-speaking countries and across Latin America. Every plugin is tested on the client's models and delivered with an installer, a manual and the source code. The diagnosis is free and takes one week.
